Well, everyone was affected, especially those who relied on the mobility sector for traveling purposes. The biggest percentage of travelers are estimated to be below the age of 40 with those within the age range of 18 to 30 still the highest. The latter age is the most active, most restless, most productive in the economic sector who also have the most demanding zeal to be everywhere and do everything at the same time.

Earlier this month, the UN Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) revealed that the theme for UN Road Safety Week 2021 will focus on speed. World Health Organization (WHO) Director of Social Determinants of Health, Dr. Etienne Krug, said that the theme “stresses how central tackling speed is to reduce deaths by 50% by 2030”.

Friday, 13th November saw a multi-faceted live stream come to life as part of a Global Online Commemoration for the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The event takes place on the third Sunday of every November to remember those lost on the world's roads. This year the event had the strapline; Remember. Support. Act. As part of the live stream, YOURS joined WHO to create an artistic experience, intertwined with artistic expressions, personal testimonies and speeches from dignitaries.

Join us for the World Day of Remembrance live stream Global Commemoration

The World Day of Remembrance (WDoR) was adopted by the United Nations through Resolution 60/5 , otherwise known as Improving Global Road Safety. The WDoR commemorates the victims and the families affected by road crashes. It draws attention to the scale of the emotional and economic devastation caused by road crashes, recognizes the suffering of road crash victims and their families, and appreciates the support and rescue of health services all over the world.  WDoR is set every third Sunday of November.

The Commonwealth Action Series featured a sub-session on fighting the biggest killer of young people in the Commonwealth – road crashes – as part of its fourth episode on youth development: inclusive, equitable, and accessible opportunities. The session featured speakers from the road safety sector who talked about the facts surrounding road safety in Commonwealth.  Members of the Coalition led a youth panel to talk about road safety and sustainable mobility in their respective countries.

World Bank releases new road safety requirements for road loans

The World Bank's Transport Global Practice has set a new road safety requirement, which will be applied to billions of dollars of World Bank loans and grants. The requirement is expected to prevent thousands of traffic deaths each year and tens of thousands of serious road injuries. The new policy was backed by members of the Three Star Coalition, which includes YOURS - Youth for Road Safety.

The Commonwealth has released a virtual event called the Commonwealth Action Series for young people to have a louder voice in policy decisions affecting them. The series will run from July to December featuring six episodes; (1) Taking Charge of Our Future, (2) Trade, Entrepreneurship, and Employment, (3) Technology and Innovation, (4) Youth Development, (5) Governance and Rule of Law, and (6) Environment. The themes of each episode will focus on the  Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) pillars.

Tackling road safety and sustainable mobility during International Risk Reduction Day

International Risk Reduction Day is observed every year on the 13 th  of August. The day represents a global call to governments and organizations from all over the world to work toward a culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. Risk reduction is multi-sectoral; it links policies on land use, building codes, public health, education, environmental protection, and climate change adaptability. Road crashes are among the major risks for the health of the general population, especially among the youth, worldwide.
