Take part in WHO photo competition for adolescent health - win $US 1000!

As part of its work with young people, the World Health Organization is putting together a report on the health of the world's adolescents. The report will look at the health and development of adolescents, present summaries of what is known about adolescent health – including what promotes or undermines their health – and how communities and countries are meeting adolescents’ needs for health and development. As part of that report, the WHO is reaching out to young people to take part in their adolescent health photo competition.

Announcing our new CORE Group member for the Russian Federation!

We are delghted to announce that YOURS has appointed a new CORE Group Member for the Russian Federation. Mr Alexander Revskiy (aged 28), who works for Road Safety Russia. The size of Russia makes it almost a continent in its self and while the country originally fell under our European remit, we have decided that appointing a country representative to navigage its vast geography will enable us to be closer to the region.

An update from Kenya: Road safety passion still strong in our participants!

It has been six months since we ran the full two week programme of the Training of Facilitators in Nairobi Kenya. The interactive, intensive and practical training gave 11 Kenyan leaders in road safety the opportunity to become trained facilitators and run training sessions with their peers on road safety risk factors facing them in their country. Now, six months on, we have reflect on the training and hear from a few of our participants.

The Caribbean Development Bank has made its library of resources and data relating to road safety available for our youth network and all those interested to access. It includes a unique access code to enable people to access a wealth of information on global road safety, road safety in the Caribbean region and a range of reports. It serves as a great database to find information on road safety for free.

7th PIN Report: Road crashes in Europe are down with more to be done

The annual  report from Road Safety Performance (PIN) Index conducted by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) is out and highlights that road traffic crashes in Europe have been reduced by 9% in comparison to 3% in 2011. While many lives have been saved, there is still much more to be done, especially in tackling the disproportionate amount of males being killed on the road.

Transport New South Wales, Australia have released a new advert campaign focusing on distracted driving themed, 'Get Your Hands Off It' featuring comedian and film maker Derek Anderson. The advert is a tongue-in-cheek video that is presented as a spoof music video and raising awareness of distracted driving in an alternative and creative manner.

Speed cameras reduce serious road crashes - The Guardian UK

Speed cameras are a contentious subject and many believe that they operate to make money rather than save lives, however, as a strict area for enforcement of speed limits, cameras are said to save many lives according to a new report by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) in the UK. RAC study shows serious collisons dropped 27% and if cameras were switched off a further 80 lives would be lost each year.

On 15-17th May 2013, YOURS partnered with the Caribbean Development Bank and the Government of Saint Lucia to run the VYBZING Forum on the topic of youth and road safety. The three day forum was a highly interactive workshop and at the end the participants left the forum as road safety advocates and ambassadors ready to create their own proposals for a road safety project in Saint Lucia. Youth flashmob for road safety takes place in Athens, Greece

As part of the Second UN Global Road Safety Week a flashmob was organized in Syntagma Square, Greece and promoted the message "Stop Road Crashes". The stunt was organized in Athens by the Hellenic Road Safety Institute (I.O.A.S) - RSI Panos Mylonas with the support of the European Comission and the European Youth Forum for Road Safety.

As part of the VYBZING Forum of 2013, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) via their youth outreach programme set an introduction to the forum by initiating an 'animated video challenge' to the youth of Saint Lucia to create educational videos on the theme of road safety. The challenge was undertaken by the youth and the winners have been announced.
