World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

“Forum for Prevention of Road Accidents”, India in association with “Road Peace”, UK observed the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on 21st November 2010 at Satabdi Bhawan, Cuttack (India).

The programme was attended by many luminaries of the state like Shri Justice Radha Krishna Patra, Chairman, Orissa State Human Rights Commission, Bhubaneswar; Smt. Laxmi Bilasini Biswal, President, Zilla Parishad, Cuttack; Sri Satyajit Mohanty, Director, Biju Patnaik State Police Academy, Bhubaneswar; Dr. Ashutosh Debata, Principal, Stewart Science College, Cuttack. Sri Rabinararayan Satpathy, Chairman presided the function.

Mr. Bikash Mohapatra, Secretary and Smt. Minati Bindhani, Joint Secretary of Forum for Prevention of Road Accidents (FPRA) delivered key note address and vote of thanks in the meeting respectively. Messages given by Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General, United Nations and Ms. Brigitte Chaudhry, Founder & President, RoadPeace (UK) were readout by Dr. Sangram Keshari Nayak. Personal story telling of bereaved family members and shearing of their sufferings in front of audience was organized. This was followed by lighting the lamps, offering flowers in memories of road accident victims etc. Observing a moment of silence was another way of remembering road crash victims.

This had drawn the attention of the common people to the epidemic scale of traffic deaths and injuries, and the potential risk to all road users. The testimonies of some road accident victims has also been documented in video and projected on this occasion. The projection of the film raised awareness of the magnitude and impact of road traffic crashes on families and society, and the need for improved post-crash care and support for the bereaved and injured.

One this special occasion, the messages of Sri Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister and Sri Sanjib Sahoo, Minister for Commerce & Transport, Government of Orissa were published in 15 leading Oriya and English news papers with highlights of welfare programme for road crash victims. The Orissa Road Safety Society introduced an educational scholarship scheme for the children of accident victims on this occasion. This was all possible due to the advocacy campaign of the Forum.
