The S.A.M.E Academy is an acronym for safety, awareness, mentoring and education academy, based in the UK. The words are used to emphasize to our audience what we deem as important in regards to road safety. Founded in 2009, it has been designed to educate, young, novice and the next generation of drivers (14 - 21 year olds) around the importance of road safety. This innovative aspect of Drivers Edge UK aims to dramatically reduce the instances of road traffic accidents and driving related crimes in the UK within young people. Our methods have been formed based on our research as an organisation and we believe we have the most effective ways of engaging and interacting with young people and delivering the correct message.
Research
Research findings showed the following (1,000 young surveyed people across the country):
- 68% of young people we surveyed didn’t want to police to assist with reinforcement and delivery.
- 81% of people we surveyed didn’t know that road traffic accidents was the leading cause of deaths in young people. (Behind knife crime and assault)
- 60% said they would attend a seminar on road safety and its relevance to aspirations and personal achievement.
Young drivers are the most at risk road user with more than 2 of every 5 deaths involving young drivers. Driving is an extremely popular topic within young people aged 14 – 21 and no matter the barriers new drivers are faced with whilst attempting to access motoring, they are still making it onto the roads with approximately 1.4 million them taking their driving tests each year.
Our unique academy consists of a programme and interactive workshops & seminars designed to develop the mind sets and attitudes of young drivers and passengers (separate to the novice factor), highlight the key causes of road traffic collisions as well as providing the awareness needed to spot hazardous situations applicable to the young and new drivers. The seminar typically lasts an hour covering the most relevant of our content within that time frame. On the other hand, the programme consists of 4 sessions typically lasting 50 minutes each with each week covering one aspect of the S.A.M.E acronym, using the remaining 10 or so minutes to have change over time or time for questions.
Goals
- To contribute towards the reduction of road traffic collisions in young people by empowering them to make the right decision as drivers and passengers.
- To change behavioural trends in young drivers across the UK to behind the wheel as drivers.
- To assist in achieving more and we do that through the ever so popular topic of driving, promoting the dangers and impact of irresponsibility & recklessness by mentoring (Enjoy and Achieve – ECM).
- Through our sessions we look to empower young people, improve self esteem and assist young people in making the right choices whilst transporting in any form of motor vehicle in regards to safety. (Stay Safe – ECM).
