Road Safety Education in Summer School 2010

The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) wished to raise awareness, increase knowledge and improve skills about the most significant issue facing children in the emirate - road injuries and deaths. So they contracted Educating Global to develop a road safety education component in the government-run Summer School 2010 programme.

This project was to develop a road safety education component as part of the official Summer School 2010 (’Sayfuna Mumayaz 2010’) programme, and to train teachers to implement it. The project began with developing a matrix of road safety learning outcomes specific to Abu Dhabi, based on international best practice in road safety education.

From this foundation, a teacher kit of highly active lessons was designed, aimed to be both educative and fun. Each kit contained 15 hours of Cycle 1 (ages 6-10) teaching ideas and activities, as well as all copysheets, certificates and letters to parents. All material was in both English and Arabic, and customised for the local context based on international best practice. There were three training workshops for teachers in the Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Gharbia Education Zones.

The instructors were Educating Global road safety education expert, Roly Hermans, and specialist in Arabic education, Ahmed AbuSaad. Teachers at all three workshops were engaged and enthusiastic. The type of teachers varied – in Abu Dhabi they included school administrators; in Al Ain they were all art teachers; and in Al Gharbia they were science teachers. This provided a challenge that the flexibility of the teacher kit was well able to meet. Teachers implemented their road safety education programmes in Summer School in June 2010, where it has proved popular with students and their parents.
