Make Helmet Mandatory Campaign

India tops global list on fatal road mishaps. It is estimated that nearly 120,000 persons die every year and 450,000 people are hospitalized due to road crashes in our country. Injuries to the head and neck are the main causes of death. Motorcycles and bicycles users sustain severe head injury and thus permanent disability. Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 mandates the use of helmets (which meet Bureau of Indian Standards requirements) by all drivers and pillion riders of two-wheelers.

The implementation of the law through the framing of rules is left to the States. States like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Chandigarh are already enforcing helmet laws. But, unfortunately the state Governments are not showing interest yet to implement this legislation. As a result of which hundreds of two wheeler riders are being killed on roads due to serious brain injuries.

Considering the above facts & figures, we are promoting a campaign “Make Helmet Mandatory” in order to make it mandatory on the part of two wheeler drivers and pillion riders to wear protective headgear while riding the vehicle. We are sure that the mandatory use of helmets can save hundreds of human lives by reducing risk of death by 69%. We are further requesting the police/enforcement authorities to strictly enforce use of helmets on the road. Since motorcycle riders and pillions in 15–49 years are the highest involved group, enforcement should be primarily targeted at them.
