GRAND ROAD SAFETY PROJECT 001

Walking Groups to Schools

A ‘walking group’ is a group of children who walk to school along an identified ‘safe’ route escorted by two adult volunteers, one of whom leads (the ‘driver’) and the other follows (the ‘conductor’). The adult volunteers are usually parents of children in the walking groups. They supervise the walking groups on a rostered basis. The ratio of adults to children is usually 1:8, so the walking groups contain around 16 children. Typically walking groups routes are 1,000-1,500 m long.

Motorcycles are an enjoyable, economical, and practical method of transportation in Nigeria. Sadly, motorcycle accidents result in thousands of injuries and deaths each year. Even the most experienced and careful rider is at the mercy of other motorists, and motorcycle accident victims often experience the most severe types of injuries as compared to other motor vehicle accidents. According to statistics a motorcyclist is 16 times more likely to be killed in an accident than an occupant of an automobile. Treating a motor cycle accident injury at the scene can be crucial. Proper first aid can save a life and prevent further injury. Injuries commonly sustained by riders and passengers are fractures of the femur, wrist and ankle fractures, head injuries, and severe internal bleeding. Giving Commercial motorcycle riders this knowledge will also help victims of other types of road accidents because motor cyclists are found on every road Nigeria.

India tops global list on fatal road mishaps. It is estimated that nearly 120,000 persons die every year and 450,000 people are hospitalized due to road crashes in our country. Injuries to the head and neck are the main causes of death. Motorcycles and bicycles users sustain severe head injury and thus permanent disability. Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 mandates the use of helmets (which meet Bureau of Indian Standards requirements) by all drivers and pillion riders of two-wheelers.
