International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent (IFRC)

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, with 186 member National Societies. As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, our work is guided by seven fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

Many victims are the primary provider of household income and, when injured or killed, their families are left without economic support. In addition, those who survive often need immediate hospital care and many require long-term support.

These injuries impose substantial economic burdens on developing nations. Often the costs exceed the total development assistance these countries receive each year. As a result, there is a direct link between road safety improvement and poverty reduction.

Call for Action
The IFRC is increasingly concerned about the rapid escalation of the global road safety crisis, which kills 3,000 people every day.
Road crash injury is a major but neglected global public health issue. Urgent action is required to reverse the growing mortality rate that affects mainly young people.

The choice is ours, collectively and individually, right now.

A new publication, entitled "Road safety - Call for action" has been produced to promote the IFRC's commitment to road safety as well as the active role played by Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies around the world in this field.

Commitment card

The IFRC has produced a personal road safety commitment card, for use by National Society governance leaders, staff and volunteers, partners in road safety and the general public.
