Two Tracks
YOURS offers two tracks in its Capacity Development Programme:
- The Youth and Road Safety Workshops
- The Training of Facilitators for Youth and Road Safety Workshops
The tracks are not mutually exclusive however serve different needs. The Youth and Road Safety Workshops Track is for short-term involvement, whereas the Training of Facilitators for Youth and Road Safety Workshops Track is recommended for long-term involvement and can become self-sustainable. A description of each of the tracks is presented below.
Youth and Road Safety Workshops Track
This track consists of Youth and Road Safety Workshops that are organized and facilitated by YOURS’ trainers. This track is recommended as a component in a larger programme that partners might be implementing or to respond to an immediate need that might arise.
Objectives
The overall objective of the Youth and Road Safety Workshops is to develop the capacities of young people to become safer road users and take action to prevent road traffic injuries. The specific objectives of the Youth and Road Safety Workshops are to:
- Improve young people’s understanding of the road safety problem in their country and around the world, particularly youth issues.
- Inspire and motivate young people to take action to prevent road traffic injuries.
- Equip youth with the knowledge and skills they need to plan and implement their own road safety projects.
Expected Outcomes
The expected outcome of the Youth and Road Safety Workshop is to develop the capacities of young people so they are able to:
- Explain how road traffic injuries take place and what puts young people at particular risk for road traffic injuries.
- Identify key risk factors in their country and explain how they contribute to road traffic injuries.
Expected Duration
The expected duration needed may vary from training to training (from 1 day till 5 days), among others it depends on the amount of topics covered and the experience of the participants. The YOURS´ facilitator will review the request and plan the amount of time that fits the needs of the particular training.
Topics
The topics addressed during the Youth and Road Safety Workshops are the following:
- Scope of the road safety problem
- Youth and road traffic crashes
- Understanding road safety – how road traffic injuries happen and how can they be prevented
- Key risk factors contributing to road traffic injuries: non-use of seatbelts, speed, alcohol and drug use, distracted driving, lack of visibility, and fatigue
- The project cycle - planning and implementing road safety projects
Training of Facilitators for Youth and Road Safety Workshops Track
The Training of Facilitators for Youth and Road Safety Workshops supports the creation of a core group of motivated and trained young facilitators who can spread the road safety knowledge among their peers in any country. Once this group of created, minimum resources will be needed to develop the capacities of other young people and scale it up.
Objectives
The overall objective of the Training of Facilitators Workshop is to build the capacity of young individuals to design and deliver Youth and Road Safety Workshops.
The specific objectives of the workshop are to enable participants to:
- Better understand the concepts of peer education and related peer-led health education methodologies.
- Acquire accurate information about road traffic injuries, especially the factors influencing youth involvement in road traffic crashes.
- Develop leadership, communication, and public speaking skills.
- Acquire the skills to facilitate a range of interactive methodologies used in Youth and Road Safety Workshops.
- Acquire basic knowledge in Youth and Road Safety Workshops design.
Expected Outcomes
The expected outcome of this training is the development of confident, competent facilitators with the knowledge and skills to:
- Explain how road traffic injuries take place and what puts young people at particular risk for road traffic injuries.
- Identify key risk factors in their country and explain how they contribute to road traffic injuries.
- Utilize peer education and active learning methodologies to design Youth and Road Safety Workshops to develop the capacities of young people in their country.
- Organize and deliver Youth and Road Safety Workshops based on the Youth and Road Safety Action Kit developed by YOURS.
